Pretty N’ Pink, an African American breast cancer awareness organization founded in 2004, was born out of Gail Winn's devotion to her best friend, Mary Cary, who was diagnosed with the disease in September 2003. Driven to action, Gail immersed herself in research to uncover every available resource and educate other women on the life-saving importance of early detection.
The organization's inaugural event—a breast cancer awareness luncheon at On the Border in DeSoto, Texas—drew an intimate crowd of 20 women. The event deeply moved the restaurant's manager, sparking a lasting partnership where the venue now hosts annual celebrations for survivors and patients every October. Happily, Mary defeated the disease and remains cancer-free today. Two decades later, Pretty N’ Pink continues its vital mission by hosting its signature annual awareness breakfast each October.
The event honors survivors and patients while educating the community on the latest advancements in breast cancer research. Led by five dedicated board members and a passionate network of volunteers, the organization offers numerous ways for the community to get involved and support the cause.Ultimately, Pretty N’ Pink serves as a powerful reminder that we all possess the inner strength to impact society positively. We must never underestimate our collective power to transform fear into understanding, ignorance into knowledge, and tragedy into hope.
