Our Beginning

Pretty N' Pink, an African American breast cancer awareness organization established in 2004, was initiated by Gail Winn following the diagnosis of her best friend Mary Cary in September 2003. Not knowing what else to do, Gail embarked on a mission to discover as much as possible about the disease, with the goal of enlightening other women about the importance of early detection and available resources.

The inaugural event was a cancer awareness luncheon at On the Border Restaurant in Desoto, Texas, which was attended by around 20 women. This powerful experience left such an impression on the restaurant manager that they now hold celebrations for cancer survivors and patients in October each year. Fortunately, Mary was able to beat the disease and is now cancer free.

Today, Pretty N' Pink continues to host their annual breast cancer awareness breakfast in October, as a way to honor breast cancer survivors and patients, as well as inform the community of the advances in research. With five board members and many devoted volunteers, there are several opportunities to become involved and aid the cause.

It's important to remember that we all possess an inner strength and capability to positively impact lives and our society. Even if we don't feel it right away, our power to change fear to understanding, ignorance to knowledge, and tragedy to hope should never be underestimated.

We are proud to partner with Cancer Support Community North Texas. Their Mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.
